Annual African American Graduation Awards

The African American Graduation Awards program is a celebration of High School and Eighth Grade graduates in Kern County. High School graduates are presented with book scholarships and Eighth Grade graduates are presented with certificates of recognition.  In 2014, AKA began a partnership with the Bakersfield Ivy Legacy Foundation, Inc. to offer greater access for Community Donors who wish to give scholarships to Kern County students.  Some Community Donors give funds to The Foundation for scholarship distribution while others give directly to the student.  AKA also invites churches and other organizations to recognize their scholarship recipients during the Annual African American Graduation Awards Program. Middle school principals and counselors submit to our chapter the names of African American honor roll students that are presented with a certificate of academic excellence and applauded for their outstanding achievement. The annual scholarship application is available online at the chapter’s website.

PRoject next step

Project Next Step is a conference and resource fair set to equip students and parents with relevant information that will help ensure student success in high school and beyond. Resources provided at the conference include homework support and intervention, high school classroom etiquette, test taking strategies, peer pressure, leadership and mentoring, high school completion and college entrance requirements, applications and deadlines. Our goal is to increase the percentage of students who maintain high school honor roll status in college prep classes while on the pathway to complete college requirements upon graduation. We have seen measurable success and we are now seeking to expand the program to support the students’ academic achievement and increase the parents’ involvement in their students’ goals. When parents understand their students’ academic and social environments, they can support their students so that they can fully experience higher levels of success. Educational institutions cannot do it alone; so, this community initiative, Project Next Step, is designed to engage and collaborate with all members of our community to facilitate the students’ success. Event collaborators include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kern High School DistrictCSU BakersfieldBakersfield College,  Kern Community Foundation, The Links Inc., National PanHellenic Council member organizations, Umoja Community ASTEP, CHristian Youth Film Society, Young Writers of Kern, and Stepping Stones Youth.
